In California, can you notarize documents using RON (remote online notarization) or does it need to be done in person?

Great question. Currently in California we cannot do remote online notarization (RON). There is a bill that is being considered in the State Legislature, but there are so many different things to consider, to be fair to all the states. So the short answer is that clients need to appear personally in front of the Notary in California.

Some of the requirements include the use of a communication technology that meets certain security and identity verification standards, the notary public must be physically located in California when performing the notarization, and the notary must keep a recording of the RON session.

There are a lot of pros and cons on remote online notarization. Here in California we will have to wait and see. As a Notary it’s great to be face to face with the clients and build a rapport with them. There are times when the customer needs some extra guidance and hand holding, and you can’t do that with RON.
